Het succes van The Super Mario Bros. Movie, lijkt het begin te zijn van een groot Nintendo Cinematic Universe.
Nintendo’s Twitter profiel werd afgelopen nacht even overgenomen door Mario-bedenker Shigeru Miyamoto. De legendarische visionary maakte bekend dat productie is gestart voor een live action The Legend of Zelda-film. Dit project wordt dus niet animated zoals The Super Mario Bros. Movie, maar echte acteurs zullen in de schoenen staan van Link, Zelda en mogelijk ook de schurk Ganondorf.
Wes Ball, bekend van hits zoals The Maze Runner, wordt regisseur van dit project. Nintendo heeft aangegeven dat de film deels zelf gefinancierd gaat worden en in samenwerking met Avi Arad wordt geproduceerd. Avi Arad werd vooral bekend door het werk in Marvel live action-films. Ook Sony Pictures doet mee aan dit project en is verantwoordelijk voor de bioscoopdistributie. Dat is opvallend, want Sony is eigenaar van het merk PlayStation, de grote concurrent van Nintendo.
The Legend of Zelda live action-film heeft nog geen releasedatum.

Statement Shigeru Miyamoto over The Legend of Zelda live action-film:
“This is Miyamoto. I have been working on the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega hit films.
I have asked Avi-san to produce this film with me, and we have now officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production. It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.”
“By producing visual contents of Nintendo IP by itself, Nintendo is creating new opportunities to have people from around the world to access the world of entertainment which Nintendo has built, through different means apart from its dedicated game consoles. By getting deeply involved in the movie production with the aim to put smiles on everyone’s faces through entertainment, Nintendo will continue its efforts to produce unique entertainment and deliver it to as many people as possible.”
